I went did a regular car service (Minor). Thought it's going be a easy service which won't take long... and then he called and told me i need to get my %26quot;Timing Belt%26quot; changed...



He said it's quite important and urgent, so i asked him for the quote... and it was $850 including labor, so i said i might have a think about it for now.



So i went online and browse around and saw most of the timing belt cost about AUD$100+- which is far far away from the quote? Would the other $750 be labor...?!?!?



Can someone tell me was the quote over priced? or that's the standard charge? Also i live near Sydney City, if anyone could suggest any other places i can change my timing belt with a lower cost that would be greatly appreciated!!! Also how much would it normally cost to replace a new timing belt? Do i really need to change it? How do i know when i need to change it?



PS: I've got a 1998 Toyota Camery (140,000 km)

My boyfriend's '03 Honda Civic is a few thousand past 100,000 miles and we need to change the timing belt before it goes. The total job depending on where you live usually ranges from 250-500. If your past 100.000 miles be sure to have it done asap because if the belt breaks the valves usually bend causing you to pay at least twice what you'll be paying to do it now. Ok here is my question and I only want answers from people who have experienced a broken timing belt on a 1.6L kia engine.

Does it damage the valves and/or pistons?

I know quite a bit about cars, but I have never changed a timing belt on a Kia before.

Here are the facts and what I have read.

Someone on the internet stated they had a 2004 Kia Rio and the timing belt broke and they got it replaced and the car runs fine. But that was pretty much what they wrote no other details about what else was broke or what else was fixed.

I have read many posts that imply the valves break and damage the pistons, but none were on the same year or the same engine. But everyone of those posts said they knew there was damage because they either heard it or the motor was locked.

My Brother's car spins over very fast and smoothly just like a non-interference engine does when the belt breaks.

He was in a residential area driving about 25mph when it broke so he was probably turning somewhere around 2000rpms.

People have asked how fast the motor was turning when the belt broke I really don't understand why that even matters. it is either an interference engine or it is not right?

If the chain snaps on a bicycle the travel of the pedals are still limited to what they were before the chain broke reguardless of how fast you are pedaling. So I really don't see the difference in 600rpms and 4000rpms if it will cause damage it will cause damage at idle too, but I do understand the faster it is going the harder things will slam, so it may cause more damage, like valves breaking completely off and getting jammed in pistons and bending rods, etc...



So yeah. Anyone who has had a timing belt actually break on a kia 1.6L preferably a 2004 rio please let me know what the damage was if any.

If its a loud squeal (not a squeak), you may have bad bearings in one of the accessories (alt, power steering pump, etc) or the tensioner/idler pulley. I'm not sure if your 2003 has a timing belt or chain, but my best guess is a timing belt. Check your owner's manual under the maintenance section (black edge of page in your manual) to see if you have any maintenance requirement for the timing belt.



If you need to change the timing belt, also change the water pump. The cost of the parts aren't too high, but the labor cost is. You don't want to go back in just to change a water pump.

This means that to gain the performance and compression ratio the combustion chambers are small and there are very close tolerances.

The problem is that if a belt, and in most cases one or both of two belts break, the valves almost always make contact with the top of the piston. This also almost always bends several valves on the cylinders affected by a broke timing belt. In a worse case scenario a valve can punch through a piston. The cost of just replacing bent valves are expense. If a piston is punctured the cost is usually more expensive than the vehicle is worth.

%26quot;If%26quot; the belt(s) is/are not broken and a person makes a very minute error during replacement then the consequences can be for more severe than the cost of letting a shop perform the repairs.

I bought the car with 10,000 miles on it. It now has 62,000 or so, and I was wondering about the timing chain/belt.



Next month I will have had this car for 4 years. Has not been in the shop even once. I do all minor maintenance (change oil faithfully every 3,500 miles, change air filter every 10,000, change transmission fluid %26amp; filter every 25,000, and change plugs every 25,000, rotate tires every 10,000 miles).



I know that this may sound excessive for the transmission filter/fluid, and spark plugs, but this is what I do to keep repair bills down. My wife drives this car; gets an average of 33 mph around town, and about (but not quite!) 43 mph on highway.



I'm still amazed that I have not had to take this car to the dealer or mechanic for ANYTHING since I bought it in July 2004.

You may call the dealer for the exact mileage... however, I believe those are recommended to be changed around 85-100k miles. Though I will say, our shop does not usually see issues with them until 150-200K miles.

But you're wasting oil by changing it every 3500 miles. The oil these days can go 5000 to 7500 miles before needing changing. Your dad probably told you to change it every 3500 miles but oil products have come a long way technologically since he was taught that buy your grandfather.

I worked on Toyots for 9 years. you're doing a fantastic job!! I wish others were like you. Toyotas are pretty indestructable. Oil changes are the most critical...but again, 3500 miles is a little too excessive.

I don't like your friends style. He may well have bent some valves, if they weren't bent already. You didn't mention the engine name, but you can find out online whether it's an interference engine or not. Honda engines rotate Counter-Clockwise!! Turn the engine by hand (a socket on the crank bolt) until the TDC marks align on the crank. Loosen the tensioner and slip the belt off the cam. Rotate the cam until the mark lines up and if it's a distributor model, the rotor points to #1. Have the belt tight on the side opposite the tensioner and release it, turn the crank CCW (Counter) 45 degrees (!/4 turn) and tighten the tensioner. Turn the crank BY HAND 2 complete revolutions until the crank comes up to TDC. Look at the cam marks. If you can't get it to line up perfectly, always advance the cam, never retard it. In your case, the mark on the cam will be to the LEFT of the mark on the valve cover. Don't bother putting the cover or anything else back. Crank the engine and see if it runs well. Shut it right off. If not, check the compression. If it's low or no, you'll need to remove the head and see what's going on. Look at the pistons and valves (with the cam removed) and see if anything is bent or otherwise damaged. If you don't know what your doing. Don't do it. Belts break all the time when the car is running - messing up the timing real good. There are proper procedures for each car how to set up the timing.



He should get a book from the library or search online for the procedure. AutoZone.com has online manuals (a little lacking on pictures). Go thru the procedure step by step carefully knowing that you can't be off by one tooth.

I think he may already have noticed the belt does not want to go on with the marks exactly in TDC position. That seems to be the standard with OHC engines, that the cam(s) hate(s) to sit at TDC. No matter. He has to be sure he pulls the engine through CCW a few revolutions to make sure the belt is right and staying right. Even new Honda tensioners don't seem manly enough to ensure the belt doesn't jump a tooth, and I have had to manually jam the tensioner against the belt and let it rebound before tightening to keep the belt from riding up on the cam sprocket. And of course the belt will jump if turned CW, as he already knows.



I wouldn't sweat the valves. I know I need to support the motor and remove the motor mount which I think all I need to do is remove 2 bolts attached to back of motor and the long bolt that runs through the rubber bushing attached to the frame... (hope that is correct).. My biggest concern is if I am working on it by myself, when I line up the timing sprockets, how do I determine top dead center for the number one cylinder? I know how to line up the crankshaft pulley according to the teeth and the vr sensor, after that I am a bit lost on finding top dead center for the number one cylinder. I have changed timing belts before but not if they had broke while running, I would would just make sure I didn't move any of the pulleys when replacing... As far as the interference fit issue, you're in luck there. The 1.9L is not an interference fit engine. Take out the spark plug from the #1 cyl (all of them if you don't want to fight the engine compression). Put the dowel in there. Now, some engines have matchmarks for TDC. Not having done a timing belt on your particular engine I'm not sure what the matchmarks look like. And they also may be covered in grime and general engine crap. If you can find them (usually small dimples on the pulleys), line them up with the %26quot;zero%26quot; (or another dimple) on the block. These are an interference fit engine. Ordinarily, a few hand tools and a Haynes manual would have gotten you through this cheaply. Or ALLDATA data base found in many libraries. If you are lucky, you didn't bend a valve. If you are UN-lucky, you will have to remove the head and have a new valve or two installed.

Timing belt noise, I think! What can be wrong and how serious is it?

I recently had my timing belt changed for my Protege, Mazda. After having it changed and one week later, there seems to be a loud belt grinding noise after the car has been driven for at least 15 minutes or so. After the engine is shut off and cools for a hour or so and then restarted, the noise is no longer there, until the car is driven again for at least 15 minutes and the noise then reoccurs. However, when the engine is cool and at idle, I can hear some mildly soft sqeaking noises..... What can possibly be the problem and how serious is this problem? Could my timing belt be too tight? The timing belt, tensioner, and idler controler were all changed already.

Oh yes, before my timing belt was replaced, it jumped because the tensioner was loose. Before the timing belt jumped, it was making this exact same noise as now, which is a loud slapping grinding noise. Any help will be much appreciated!Timing belt noise, I think! It was hydraulic and did not come from Mazda. Ince I got one from Mazda it never failed again. Is yours hydraulic? If you have the exact same noise now as then, are you sure it isnt the timing cover or another pulley or belt rubbing the timing cover. is it a4 cyl.?
